Clara lad excels at World Games

A KILKENNY boy has done brilliantly in his first World Sport Stacking Championships and was unlucky not to win a medal, his coach has said.

Eleven year-old James Carrigan from Smithstown, Maddoxtown, Co Kilkenny was among four Irish youths who competed in the World Sport Stacking Championships in Denver.

Sport Stacking involves up and down stacking 12 competition cups in various sequences against the clock. It is widely used by elite sports athletes as a means of improving their hand-eye co-ordination and boosting ambidexterity.

Glasgow Celtic supporters celebrate

MEMBERS of The Wolfe Tone branch of the Glasgow Celtic Supporters’ Club had an enjoyable night in The Rivercourt Hotel, Kilkenny, on Saturday.

The Hoops may not be enjoying the best season in the history of the famous club but supporters remain loyal.

For years the Wolfe Tone branch members have been making regular trips to Glasgow to support their heroes and in turn former players, some of whom now enjoy legend status, have attended functions of the Kilkenny club.

Among those still championing the cause if Derek Maher who was again among the chief organisers of the weekend event.

Timmy shows Blues the way

IT WAS another busy weekend for Kilkenny players in the Airtricity National League.

Success was the name of the game for North Kilkenny lad Timmy Purcell, formerly of UCD who scored the first goal for First Division League leaders Waterford United as the Blues saw off Mervue United 2-3 in Galway.

Another Kilkenny youngster who has played a major role in the renaissance at the Regional Sports Complex in Waterford is former Kilkenny City U21 player David Grincell.

Davy Mulcahy was in his usual hard tackling form as St Patrick’s Athletic played host to newly promoted Sporting Fingal in The Premier League at Richmond Park.

Great weekend for Kilkenny hurling

IT WAS a great weekend for Kilkenny hurling. St Kieran's College collected their 17th All-Ireland senior hurling crown when they stormed to victory over Ard Scoil Ris while Kilkenny eased past Limerick in the Allianz National Hurling League.

St Kieran's College looked to be doomed as they trailed by five points in the dying minutes of their clash with Ard Scoil who were chasing their first title. But, in typical Kilkenny fashion, the student Cats roared back for a wonderful victory.

Flood money follows devastation

THERE is good news for Kilkenny homeowners as the Government has awarded over €500,000 to Kilkenny County Council for flood relief.

“Late last year, I saw first-hand the devastation to Kilkenny homeowners caused by unprecedented flooding. The difficulties and expense to homeowners and families was compounded by the fear that something similar could happen again,” Deputy John McGuinness told Kilkenny Alive.

“In response to this, the Government has awarded over €500,000 to the County Council for flood relief that will concentrate efforts in the areas that are most at risk.

Audio All-Stars for Kyteler's Inn

TOP CLASS Kilkenny musician and entertainer John Travers will be among the stars when The Audio All-Stars play Kyteler’s Inn on Friday, March 26.

John has been on the music scene since he was a young boy. He started with The Fifth Degree, played for several big bands, played in Switzerland and gigged with some of the top musicians in the world.

He is originally from Fatima Place and will be remembered as a huge supporter of Emfa, later Kilkenny City, in their fledgling days at Buckley Park.

Lost dog has just been found

A 17-year-old West Highland Terrier missing from her Green Street, Kilkenny, home since mid-morning on Thursday, has been found.

 

Rosie was found wandering in nearby Vicar Street and was picked up by a kind woman driver from Thomastown. She will be returned to her owner later this evening.

The family pet has impaired hearing and also suffers from bad eyesight.

She is white in colour and is very friendly. She has now rejoined the pet cats at their Green Street home.

Katie (7) is friendly festive face

LITTLE Katie Flynn of Millennium Court in Kilkenny City is the friendly face of St Patrick's Day in Kilkenny City.

Kilkenny Alive met Katie, aged 7,

in St Kieran's Street on the eve of St Patrick's Day and, decked in her decorative festival hat, she was really looking forward to today's parade where she will be marching with fellow Irish dancers

 

There are parades at four Kilkenny centres today to honour our Patron Saint.

Celebrations are already underway in Graignamanagh while there are also parades in Urlingford, Inistioge and Kilkenny City.

IT WAS arguably the greatest ever St Patrick’s Day in Kilkenny. The big parade that took over one and a half hours to cross the city was one of the best supported in years.

 

 

Primary principals quitting in Kilkenny

INFORMATION released by Fine Gael Senator in Carlow-Kilkenny, John Paul Phelan shows that 33 principals resigned from primary schools in the two counties in the last three years He said this is having a serious impact on children, teachers and parents.
 
Senator Phelan (31) said that this represents a ‘flood of resignations’ when the number of primary schools in Carlow and Kilkenny are taken into account and that deputy principals are also leaving in droves with 14 of these also taking flight since 2007.
 
“This flood of retirements can only be considered top level teacher flight.
 

Big turnout for Small Firms' boss

Ms Callan spoke about the actions that firms need to take to survive the recession. Over 40, including three men, attended the Rivercourt Hotel.

Former Taoiseach is dinner guest

FORMER Taoiseach John Bruton was guest speaker at a Fine Gael fundraising lunch in Kilkenny.

 

Mr Bruton’s presence ensured a good turnout of the party faithful, including local business people, who listened to his every word at the Rivercourt Hotel gathering.

 

Mr Bruton was Taoiseach from 1994 to 1997. He served as a minister under Liam Cosgrave and Garret Fitzgerald. He was Minister for Finance and Industry, Trade and Commerce at different times.

 

Two tier health leads to more tears!

IRELAND'S two-tier health system is the main impediment to public confidence in the health service. This is according to Cllr Michael O'Brien who recently attended a meeting of the Health Services Executive (HSE) Forum in Cork.

 

Speaking at the meeting he said that he agreed with the positive intention of the HSE to reconfigure acute services only on what is in the best interests of the patient. He said that the best politicians

he ever met were in the medical profession, who, he alleged, tended to close ranks when it suited themselves.

Senior hurling and senior football League games are both away and both are timed for 2.30.
