Race night in Ferrybank

A RACE night in aid of the Niall Mellon Township Trust will be held in the Shanty Bar, Ferrybank on Saturday. The first race will take place at 8.30pm. The fund-raising night will be hosted by Linda Power and Michelle McDonald. All support is welcome.

Table quiz in Kilmacow

A TABLE quiz in aid of the Kilmacow Pioneers Association will be held at 9pm on Friday in the Fox’s Den, Kilmacow. The cost per table of four is €20. All support is welcome.

Willie Meighan of Rollercoaster Records is holding one of his legendary fundraising discos tomorrow night (Saturday) in Cleere's Theatre.

Raffle tickets will be on sale during the night and all funds raised will go towards the Susie Long Hospice Fund.

Tribute to Kerbdog

FANS of Kerbdog will be delighted with the news that a tribute album 'Pledge: A Tribute To Kerbdog' is to be released on March 8.

Although the Kilkenny band split up in 1998 they still enjoy cult-like popularity amoung music fans.

The album is being released by Stressed Sumo Records and includes covers by Mike Got Spiked, Cars On Fire, Left Side Brain, Dutch Schultz, Frank Turner, Days of Worth, Stations, Jamie Lenman, Knievel Genius, Hold Your Horse Is, Dave McPherson, Ocean Bottom Nightmare and Dry Rise.

It features many of the band's most popular hits including Severed, Sally, Mexican Wave and JJ's Song.

Everlasting Moments

THE next screening by Kilkenny Film Club is based on the true story of a working-class mother who, in in the early 1900s, won a camera in the lottery.

'Everlasting Moments' depicts how the woman's life is changed forever by this stroke of luck.

However, while she finds self-worth and new friendship with the camera, her abusive husband sees it as a threat.

The Oscar shortlisted film will be shown in Set Theatre, John Street at 8pm on January 26.

Captain Moonlight album launch

KILKENNY MC Captain Moonlight will launch his new album 'Agroculture Part III – On the Lough' at Set Theatre on Saturday night.

He will be supported by Dundalk punk-folk poet/singer Jinx Lennon and Kilkenny DJ Cool C.

Cabaret and burlesque night returns to Kilkenny

THE legendary Can Can Casino, a show of olde world charm with a hint of Vaudeville, cabaret and burlesque, is coming back to Kilkenny with a Christmas bang. Organisers are delighted to announce the show's return on Wednesday December 23 at Kyteler's Inn.

The all new cast includes Sapphira Swann who has established herself as one of Ireland’s premier burlesque starlets and has quickly become a favourite at the Dublin Burlesque & Cabaret Social Club. Sprinkled with magic, glamour and humour, Sapphira’s cheeky fairytale routines capture the imagination of audiences wherever she performs.

All That Jazz are a four piece dance troupe that perform sensational solo and group jazz, tap and swing dance routines in period costumes.

The Charity Chop

TRIG Promotions, Kilkenny is hosting a Christmas party in Cleere's of Parliament Street on Saturday December 19.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Chernobyl Children Fund.

The line up includes Kilkenny bands TAME, Modern Rik and Chemical Addiction and also Ozzmium from Co Down, Sylian Rayle from Dublin and gangsta rapper guests TRIG & BOO.

The event will also include raffles and prizes and an event called 'The Charity Chop' which will involve volunteers, including Jimmy Trigger of Trig Promotions, getting their hair chopped off or their heads shaved.

The fun kicks off at 8:30pm and entry is €6.

Accidental Death Of An Anarchist

THE Devious Theatre Company are launching their Dario Fo Season with the maniacal murder mystery Accidental Death Of An Anarchist, arguably the Nobel Prize winning dramatist’s most famous play.

The cast includes Alan Butler, Sean Hackett, Simone Kelly, Ken McGuire, John Morton and David Thompson playing the famed role of the shape shifting Madman. The production is directed by John Morton, who previously co-directed Trainspotting for Devious Theatre.

The Mayor's Hootenanny 2009

THE Mayor's Hootenanny, an evening of music with Mayor Malcolm Noonan and friends, will take place in Kilkenny Castle on Friday December 4.

All proceeds from the evening will go to the Good Shepherd Centre, Kilkenny which provides accommodation for up to 50 homeless men a night.

Acts include Clive Barnes, members of The Barflies, Jimi and John Conroy, John Bermingham, Billy Carrigan, Little Black Wren and Davy Holland.

The Baader Meinhof Complex

ACADEMY Award and Golden Globe nominee,' The Baader Meinhof Complex' is the next offering from Kilkenny Film Club, on Tuesday.

The film begins in Germany 1967. The children of the Nazi generation have grown up in the devastation their parents created. They vowed fascism would never rule again. In their fight for freedom they lost themselves in the cause and ignited a revolution around the world.

Abendmusik for St Canice's Cathedral

A CONCERT that involves a collaboration between Resurgam and the Irish Baroque Orchestra will take place tonight (Friday) at St Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny.

The programme for 'Abendmusik: Cantatas in Context' takes its inspiration from the liturgical milieu within which JS Bach composed his cantatas, masses and organ chorales, and the important relationship that existed in this tradition between scripture and music.

Dame Alice Kyteler returns

THE streets of the city will be taken over by Dame Alice Kyteler and other ghosts and ghouls from 2pm to 6pm tomorrow afternoon (Saturday).

Born in Kilkenny in 1263, Dame Alice Kyteler was rumoured to have poisoned all four of her husbands. After standing trial for witchcraft in 1324, she managed to escape being burned at the stake by leaving her maid Petronella to perish in her place.

She was never heard of again. That is until the organisers of the Kilkenny 400 celebrations lured her back to be the main attraction of the city’s Hallowe'en celebrations.

“It is rumoured that Dame Alice and Petronella still haunt the city and we would caution everyone to watch out this Hallowe'en for the witches, ghosts and giants who will be roaming the streets of Kilkenny.

Season three of Green Screen

SEASON three of Future Proof Kilkenny's 'Green Screen' will kick off at 8pm on Thursday. The popular film and documentary screenings examine the global issues of sustainability, justice, equality and the environment.

This year's screenings will take place in the historic surroundings of City Hall on High Street.

The program will commence with 'King Corn' - a film about two best friends who move to Iowa to grow corn on an acre of soil and then follow it on its journey to the dinner plate. The film is enormously entertaining, unexpectedly moving, earnest and open-minded, and more than a little bit tragic.

Rockfall's 21st anniversary CD launch

THE launch of Rockfall's 21st anniversary CD takes place tonight (Friday) in Set theatre, John Street.

More than 10 local bands and DJs including Saving J, Backdoor Blues, River Valley Band, Blues Ark, The Fundamentals, Big Guns, Rekoj, The Uptown Band, Canice Kenealy and Johnny Hillman are lined up to play.

MCs for the event are Cormac Battle (2FM) and Kilkenny Mayor Malcolm Noonan.

Doors open 8.15pm and the first band is due on stage at 9pm.

Tickets are €10 and are available from Rollercoaster Records and Langton's Hotel.

All proceeds will go to the O'Neill Centre at Enable Ireland.

JP Ryan 'Set' to launch album

POPULAR Kilkenny musician JP Ryan will launch his new album 'Dancing With Anima' tonight (Friday) at Set theatre, John Street.

JP Ryan’s strongest influences are the abundance of Irish acts that have graced the airwaves and live music scene over the years. The prelude of JP’s musical endeavours was very much influenced by old Irish folk songs.

After graduating from art college in the mid 1990s JP integrated music and art into his profession in the area of art and health while also playing live music on a leisurely basis. Continuing his education, JP went on to study Art Psychotherapy and completed a Postgraduate Diploma from Hertfordshire University, followed by an MA from Crawford College in Ireland.

James McMurtry Set to play Kilkenny

A GIG by James McMurtry and the Heartless Bastards takes place in the new Set Theatre, John Street on October 14.

Legendary musician, Ian McLagan (Faces), will join McMurtry's band on keyboards for the tour. Austin singer/songwriter, Jon Dee Graham, will open most of the dates. Both McLagan and Graham appear on Just Us Kids.
