PEOPLE have become reliant on their cars. If it’s only going to the local shop they hop into the car and off they go, afraid they might miss a bit of their favourite soap. Not only would they save a few quid on their motoring bill in the year but that bit of fresh air mightn’t do any harm either. A pet hate of mine is people parking in the disabled spaces outside shops, God forbid they might have to take more than 20 steps to get where they are going.

AROUND this time nearly 100 years ago a few unorganised men took over strategic buildings in Dublin in an attempt to overthrow the residing powers in our country and create a new state, a new republic.

This was a very messy attempt, an unplanned rising which resulted in practically all the leaders being executed.

ENERGY MINISTER Eamon Ryan announced that the SEI grant scheme is now "Open for business" and SEI is now accepting applications. From March 25, 2009 people wishing to save energy and money will be able to apply for grants.

2,390 people executed worldwide during 2008

Seven people were executed everyday around the world in 2008

AMNESTY International has revealed that between January and December 2008 at least 2,390 people were executed in 25 countries around the world with at least 8,864 sentenced to death in 52 states.

"The death penalty is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. Beheadings, electrocutions, hangings, lethal injections, shootings and stonings have no place in the 21st century," said Irene Khan, Secretary General of Amnesty International.
