IT WAS a marvellous weekend for Kilkenny hurling. St Kieran's College came back from what looked like an impossible situation in the All-Ireland colleges' senior final when a late, late storm of scores saw them collect their 17th crown at the expense of Ard Scoil Ris.

Meanwhile in Limerick, Kilkenny full back Noel Hickey was back in hurling action when he played the proverbial stormer as Kilkenny eased to victory over Limerick in a game that mattered little on the league table but meant a lot when it came to give match practice to several players.

The Kilkenny senior squad is out again today, Monday, when a Brian Cody selection continues the Championship build up with a 'friendly' against South East neighbours, Wexford.

Timmy shows Blues the way

IT WAS another busy weekend for Kilkenny players in the Airtricity National League.

Success was the name of the game for North Kilkenny lad Timmy Purcell, formerly of UCD who scored the first goal for First Division League leaders Waterford United as the Blues saw off Mervue United 2-3 in Galway.

Another Kilkenny youngster who has played a major role in the renaissance at the Regional Sports Complex in Waterford is former Kilkenny City U21 player David Grincell.

Davy Mulcahy was in his usual hard tackling form as St Patrick’s Athletic played host to newly promoted Sporting Fingal in The Premier League at Richmond Park.

Fighting Cat denied by a whisker

A GALLANT effort by the brilliant TJ Reid to grab a late, late equaliser for Kilkenny failed by a whisker as the Cats fell to their third defeat in the Allianz National League.

In a pulsating tie in front of a crowd of over 7,000, Kilkenny started sluggishly, rallied brilliantly but in the end were pipped by Galway on a scoreline of 1-23 (26 points) to 2-21 (27 points).

Nobody headed for the exits as the match went into a rather lengthy period of injury time following the stretchering off of the Galway goalkeeper following an accidental clash.

A SMASHING Kilkenny woman celebrated her 50th birthday in style at the weekend.

Marie Shah, aka Marie Cummins, formerly of Irishtown, Kilkenny, is not 50 for another few days but she chose last Friday to celebrate in style at Langton’s Set Theatre.

It turned out to be a colourful fancy dress affair in a brilliant setting and friends turned up in big numbers to make it a memorable night for Marie and indeed for the entire Cummins family.

Treasured guests included Marie’s mother Josie and her 14 year old daughter Nailah.

McGuinness calls on Cowen to resign

By:
Jim Rhatigan
FORMER Minister for Enterprise, John McGuinness, has effectively called on Brian Cowen to step down as Taoiseach.

While he didn’t actually use the word ‘resign’ he said that Mr Cowen would have to seriously consider his position.

He said that in his ministerial reshuffle, Mr Cowen had acted in the interests of tribalism and the party rather than in the best interests of the country and he felt it was his duty to speak out about that.

This is not the first spat between Mr Cowen and the outspoken Deputy McGuinness.

THERE were mixed fortunes for local schools in All-Ireland Colleges' Senior Hurling Semi-Finals, Roinn 'A', on Saturday.

St Kieran's College reached the All-Ireland Final after a nail biting clash with Athenry that went to extra time. It ended 0-16 to 0-13.

But Kilkenny CBS crashed to Árd Scoil Rís, Limerick by 3-13 to 2-11.

So the Easter Sunday All-Ireland showdown will be between St Kieran's and Árd Scoil, Limerick.

Soccer shocker as Tullaroan triumph

By:
Jim Rhatigan
TWO results stand out after a weekend of Kilkenny soccer. Freebooters beat old rivals Evergreen in the Maher Shield and Tullaroan knocked Deen Celtic ‘A’ out of the McCalmont Cup.

As Sunday approached, the big interest would have been in the city derby for a place in the semi-final of the Pat Maher Shield. But as weekend results filtererd in, it was the cup shock that proved to be the talking point as Tullarown, better known for their hurling prowess, made Kilkenny soccer sit up and take notice.

Had the bookies taken an interest in the game in Tullaroan, Deen Celtic ‘A’ would have been firm favourites to carry on. In fact it would not have been worthwhile placing a bet on them, the odds would have been so small.
