A HURLING and camogie blitz born out of a sculpturing symposium is still thriving in Tullahought. It was in 1992 that Mike Williams presented a shield for the winners of a schoolboys' hurling blitz.
Three years ago a Heritage Weekend was launched by Mary Egan and the blitz which had fallen by the wayside, was revived, and the game of camogie added.
The competitions involve different clubs and medals are presented by the community liaison section of the Gardai. Eddie Nolan represented the Gardai on Sunday.
WHAT A fantastic Saturday afternoon it was for Kilkenny camogie. Kilkenny senior team had a brilliant 1-13 to 1-11 victory over Galway in the All-Ireland Senior Camogie semi-final and while the big crowd was delighted with the silken skills and courage of the senior girls, there was also much admiration for the half time exhibition by local camogie kids.
The first senior game was a classic. It was a super advertisement for the game of camogie. Indeed the entire afternoon suggested that the girls' game has reached a pinnacle in the country. In the second 'semi' Cork beat Wexford in another camogie cracker.
It's 1-14 to 1-11 at Nowlan Park with two minutes of injury time to go. Shamrocks are poised but courageous James Stephens are refusing to die. Man of the match: No doubt it's Eoin Reid.
It's almost all over at Anfield where Liverpool and particularly manager Rafa Benetiz breathe a hugh sigh of relief as they halt their losing streak. Liverpool's Mascherano has been sent off in injury time for a foul on United goalkeeper Van Der Saar. Now it's well and truly over as Ngog scores Liverpool's second goal five minutes into injury time.
Manchester United defender Vidic has received a second yellow card and his marching orders in the Premiership clash with Liverpool who are about to collect three points. The game is in the final minute.
Pardon the pun, but the senior county final would appear to be wide open as half time approaches. Both teams have now fired four wides from scoreable positions. But, playing against the wind, Shamrocks are ahead by 0-4 to 0-3.
THE YOUNG guns of the Fenians and Lisdowney ended all square after a cracking Roinn 'B' Minor County Final at Nowlan Park today.
At the end it was 1-13 to the Johnstown boys and 2-10 to Lisdowney so the young men must do it all again before either clubs gets its hands on the trophy.
There are less than five minutes to go to the throw in for the senior hurling county final between Ballyhale Shamrocks and James Stephens.
PERSISTENT rain may prove to be a problem for Sunday sport in Kilkenny. However popular Kilkenny Umbro League fixtures secretary John Corrigan is keeping his fingers crossed that a majority, if not all, of his weekend pogramme will go ahead.
He is happy that two games were played at youths' level today and at the time of writing all tomorrow's junior programme is still intact.
