Wednesday, December 30, 2009 A MAJOR fire at Supermac's Restaurant and Takeaway, closed the centre of Kilkenny City last night.
Six units of Kilkenny Fire Brigade rushed to High Street to tackle the blaze which was spreading rapidly.
And a large force of Gardai shut the street and all access routes to traffic and pedestrians.
The fire broke out around 10pm in the restaurant, which is part of the old Monster House building and is directly across the street from City Hall.
The flames spread quickly to the upper section of the restaurant and the residents of flats and apartments in William Street and Poyntz Lane were evacuated.
Accommodation was found for them in the city and their situation will be reviewed today (Wednesday).
Just over 100 years ago, in 1907, there was a serious fire outbreak at the old Monster House.
