IN THE beginning it was Cartoon Saloon’s ‘The Secret of Kells’ that carried Kilkenny’s hopes of an Oscar in Hollywood.

Then Kilkenny Alive broke the news that Kilkenny had a second chance of Oscar glory with ‘The Door’, directed by Juanita Wilson and produced by her husband James Flynn who has deep Kilkenny roots.

Kilkenny Alive is now delighted to highlight the fact that our city and county could be in line for a hat-trick of Oscar honours.

The film ‘Up in the Air’ sees actor George Clooney being nominated for best leading male while ‘Up in the Air’ is also a nominee in the best films category.

George has many Kilkenny connections. He is related to the family of the late Pearse Clooney of Maudlin Street, Kilkenny and has many cousins in our city and county.

The ‘Secret of Kells’ is directed by Tom Moore and will be battling for glory in the Animated Feature Film category.

‘The Door’ has a big Kilkenny input. James Flynn, a former Executive Director with Cartoon Saloon, is son of the late Paddy Flynn of James’s Green, Kilkenny.

Paddy who passed away in December 2008 was son of the late Jimmy and Eileen Flynn of James’s Green. Mr Flynn was principal of St Canice’s Boys School in the Butts while his wife was a noted music teacher.

James is nephew of Liz Walsh, MD of Stonehouse Books at MacDonagh Junction in Kilkenny City.

‘The Door’ is nominated in the Best Short Film (Live Action) category.
